My friend, Steve, said that he could get tickets to a University party – Durham University. I asked him what would it be like and he told me it would have a disco. This was in the 1980s. So I dressed for a disco. Light coloured trousers, white bomber jacket and striped t-shirt. He was dressed similarly. When we got to the event, to our horror, we realised it was a ball not a disco. All the students, we dressed up. Boys in DJs and girls in taffeta ballgowns. We felt completely out of place but tried to enjoy it as much as we could.
Not the belle of the ball
