What’s the hardest decision you’ve ever had to make? Why?

My mother had been ill with balance issues and because of her history, the General Practitioner believed she had an ear infection. She was treated but it didn’t get better. It got worse. She kept going back to the doctors but they didn’t do anything more. Finally I had a row with the doctor and demanded that they referred her to hospital. When she was eventually seen, things changed quickly. By then it was too late. They had found that she had cancer in her lungs and also in her brain. The medical staff wanted us to tell her so they could be more open with their work with her. But my family discussed it and said no. We asked that they continued treating her for her ear infection. That was what we called it. She didn’t have long. We felt there was enough pain without creating more for her. She didn’t need to know she was dying. Luckily, the brain tumour affected her memory so she would not remember details. That is what happened. I still think back on this decision and question it. But deep down I feel it was right. She was suffering, she didn’t need to suffer anymore knowing she was dying.
